Planning Your Wedding Ceremony

Wedding Ceremony

Your wedding ceremony will be one of the most important parts of your wedding day. It is the reason for the gathering and the celebration. Your wedding ceremony will probably include the wedding party, officiant, witnesses, speakers and all the special traditions you include. These tips will help you plan your wedding ceremony.

Defining the Wedding Party

Traditionally, the wedding ceremony includes a wedding party that consists of a maid of honor, bridesmaids, best man, groomsmen, page boys, flower girls and parents. Each special person has a very important role and position. It is a good idea to create a chart for your wedding party with a list of names and the specific tasks being delegated to each person. It will help you visualize placement and responsibilities during the wedding ceremony.

Roles During the Wedding Ceremony

It is important to understand the role of each person during the wedding ceremony. The maid of honor is a personal assistant to the bride on her wedding day and takes a supportive role throughout the entire event, especially at the wedding arch. The best man does the same for the groom, and usually holds the rings during the ceremony. These are important people you absolutely cannot imagine the moment without. Bridesmaids and groomsmen make up the rest of the supportive group that will have a role in planning with you and supporting you during your big moment. Page boys escort flower girls. Flower girls walk down the aisle behind the ring bearer and scatter rose petals or blow bubbles. Some couples chose to have a ring bearer hold the rings, instead of the best man. Having children participate in the wedding ceremony is a personal choice and completely optional.

Procession During the Wedding Ceremony

The procession begins with the entrance of the mother of the bride. This signals that the wedding ceremony is about to begin. Once she takes her front row seat, the groom will walk down the aisle and take his place at the wedding arch. Sometimes the groom’s parents escort him down the aisle. The best man makes his entrance, followed by the groomsmen. The bridesmaids follow behind the groomsmen, one by one. The maid of honor walks down the aisle behind the bridesmaids. Sometimes the best man escorts the maid of honor and the groomsmen escort the bridesmaids down the aisle in pairs. The page boys and flower girls make their entrance before the bride, dropping rose petals on the aisle. Traditionally, the father of the bride escorts the bride down the aisle and gives her away. This role could be filled by a family member, close friend or the bride could walk alone.

Choosing Your Officiant

If you want your marriage legally recognized, you should choose to have an officiant conduct your wedding ceremony. Your officiant will help you plan the rituals, readings and vows you want part of your wedding ceremony. Never be afraid to step outside of the box and do things differently. Incorporate unique customs or create your own. Think about how you envision your wedding ceremony and your officiant will help you make it possible. Whether you are writing your own vows, considering a unity candle or sand ceremony, the officiant will be the coordinator of all your customs and rituals. They will deliver special speeches and pause for readings. They will explain traditions to your guests in attendance and guide you through the ceremony. Your officiant will make all the difference in your special moments and make your wedding ceremony legal.
